Suspended driver causes collision while fleeing from traffic stop on IOP Connector: IOPPD

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) — A woman driving with a suspended license is facing new charges following a collision at the Isle of Palms (IOP) Connector Wednesday evening.

Aaliyah Deja Smith, 24, of Elgin is charged with driving under suspension for DUI and failing to stop for law enforcement. She is also facing her second DUI charge, pending the results of a blood draw, according to the Isle of Palms Police Department (IOPPD).

According to the IOPPD, Smith fled a traffic stop in her vehicle after she was pulled over for speeding on the IOP Connector. Officers did not pursue her due to department policy, but surrounding agencies were advised to be on the lookout for her vehicle.

Police say they were notified of a collision at the IOP Connector and Rifle Range Road at 8:48 p.m. The driver in the collision was identified as Smith and she was taken into custody.

As of April 18, Smith is booked at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, according to jail records.
