Kiawah Island is holding a special election Tuesday as the town looks to elect a new mayor and a member of town council.

Councilman Brad Belt and Mayor Pro Temp Michael Heidingsfelder are both running to become mayor after Mayor John D. Labriolar announced his early resignation in January 2024.

His resignation officially took effect March 31.

E. Luke Farrell, a planning commission member, and Peter Stockman are running to fill the empty town council seat.

Polls will be open on the island from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sandcastle on Shipwatch Road.
