North Charleston police report 10% drop in violent crime through first four months

Violent crime and nonviolent crime rates have decreased in North Charleston, the city's police department said Tuesday.

In the first four months of 2024, there was an overall 10% decrease in violent crime. Nonviolent crime has decreased by 8% overall.

However, the number of murders, six, is an increase (1) from the same period in 2023.

"Our officers remain committed to working around the clock to keep the peace in our city," the North Charleston Police Department said on social media.

Aggravated assaults with firearms have decreased by 4% while aggravated assaults in general have decreased by 13%, police said.

Rapes in North Charleston have dropped by 35%.

Robberies have increased by 16%, with business robberies rising by 60%.

Robberies of persons have increased by 11%.

Police have arrested 2% more illegal gun carriers.

DUI arrests have gone up by 41%, and narcotics arrests have gone up by 11%, police said.
