After North Charleston Police Chief Greg Gomes announced his retirement, the department has begun a nation-wide search to find his successor.

Gomes joined the department in 1998 and worked his way up to become chief after former Chief Reggie Burgess successfully ran for mayor of the city. Gomes's retirement will take effect June 30, 2024.

Mayor Burgess selected Special Assistant to the Mayor David Cheatle to oversee the selection process for the next police chief.

”David Cheatle was my Assistant Chief of Police when I was Chief, before his retirement," Mayor Burgess said. "He has 28 and a half years law enforcement experience here at North Charleston and a Master Degree in Criminal Justice from Charleston Southern University. He also attended and graduated from both the FBI National Academy and Senior Management Institute of Policing. He has the experience and expertise to assist and oversee the process.”

Cheatle is in negotiation with the Police Executive Research Forum to help with the selection process.

Although searching nationally, North Charleston's three deputy chiefs will be able to apply and participate in the selection process, a North Charleston spokesperson said.

“Not only will this process further develop our Deputy Chiefs, but their work over the years in relationship building with our citizens only makes it fair that they have an opportunity to apply and participate," Mayor Burgess said.
