North Charleston felon sentenced to 46 months for repeated firearms possession

A North Charleston man was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm while a felon.

Da’Shawn Marquis Richards, 25, was sentenced by United States District Judge David C. Norton to 46 months imprisonment followed by three years of court-ordered supervision, according to a release from United States Attorney Adair Boroughs office.

Prosecutors showed evidence that Richards was wanted for murder and attempted murder in Charleston County in November 2021.

While he was being arrested for those charges, law enforcement officials found a loaded handgun with an extended magazine in his vehicle, evidence showed.

While he was out on bond for the murder and attempted murder charges on March 22, 2023, officers again searched his car and found another loaded handgun, the release states.

The sentence Richards received was the maximum sentence based on the sentencing guideline range.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI Columbia Field Office, and the North Charleston Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Lietzow is the prosecutor in the case.
