New push to update South Carolina’s body camera legislation

The death of Andrew Brown, Jr. has body camera laws in the spotlight, particularly the release of the video. South Carolina was one of the first in the nation to pass such legislation. In North Carolina, a judge has to approve the release of the video, but it’s different in the Palmetto State. The law signed by then Governor Nikki Haley in 2015 requires police to use body cameras, but it’s up to law enforcement’s discretion whether to release the footage.
