The Goose Creek Fire Department has reignited the drive to become a firefighter.

The department has intensified the hiring process.

This as the demand for firefighters is expected to increase by seven percent in the next two years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There is a mental and physical test, so when the call comes, Goose Creek Fire Fighters are prepared.

"We've always got to be ready, we've always got to be in shape," Captain Bill Campbell said.

"You have to want to be here," Firefighter Paramedic Chadwick Davis said.

The department’s hiring process is a true test of strength, endurance, and determination.

There are 12 minutes on the clock with nine tasks to accomplish.

"Get in the gym six months ago," Lt. Brendan Perault said.

Hose connections, stair climbs, and forcible entry are required before crossing the finish line.

"This at least gives you an idea of how much energy you're going to put on the job," Davis said.

"If they want it prior to working here they're going to continue that mindset throughout their career which is what we're looking for," Perault said.

But candidates must use more than muscle.

A timed written test and a formal interview process allow both the department and the applicant to see if they are the right fit.

"We live here. We spend a third of our lives here," Campbell said.

The job is not for everyone and not just anyone can pass; However, firefighters say if they are fueled by passion, they will better serve the community.

"Even if they do fail we welcome them to come back. Seeing that level of energy and motivation and determination to actually go through all the steps is that's a huge part of it too. And something that we will remember in the future," Perault said.
