Citadel cadet who participated in Jan. 6 Capitol attack files to run for SC House

The Citadel cadet who pled guilty to participating in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol is running for the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Elias Irizarry of Rock Hill filed as a Republican candidate for state House District 43 on March 27, according to the South Carolina Election Commission. The district covers Chester and York counties.

While Irizarry was a freshman at The Citadel, video footage captured him participating in the Jan. 6 attack and entering the Capitol through a broken window. He pled guilty to entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds.

The current state representative for District 43 is Republican Randy Ligon, who is seeking re-election. As of March 28, according to the election commission, Irizarry and Ligon are only candidates who have filed to run.
