Brooks Hampton Templeton, son of GOP congressional candidate, arrested on assault charges

Brooks Hampton Templeton, the son of South Carolina 1st Congressional District challenger Catherine Templeton, was booked in the Charleston County jail on assault charges Tuesday.

Brooks Hampton Templeton was charged with assault and battery in the first degree and his bond was set for $30,000, which was posted on the same day, Charleston County jail records show.

The conditions of the bond were that the 18-year-old could not have any contact with the victim nor any family members of the victim verbally or electronically, according to court records.

News 4 has requested the arrest warrant from the Mount Pleasant Police Department and arrest records. Court and city records also show Brooks Hampton Templeton and Catherine Templeton share an address.

Brooks Hampton Templeton has an initial court appearance date set for June 7 and a second appearance date set for Oct. 7 concerning the assault charge, court records show.

According to jail records, this is the second time Brooks Hampton Templeton has been arrested.

On Sept. 9, 2023, he was charged with pointing and presenting firearms at a person, according to jail records. The charge was dismissed on Jan. 25 due to insufficient evidence.

Templeton is running to win the Republican party nomination in Rep. Nancy Mace's district.

Previously, Templeton was the director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and ran for South Carolina governor in 2018.

When asked about the incident, Templeton's campaign said, "We're not going to comment on a legal matter regarding a high school fight."
