A residential fire in North Charleston Wednesday evening displaced 20 people, with one person being sent to the hospital.

Deputy Chief Christian Rainey said the North Charleston Fire Department was dispatched at 5:53 p.m. for a structure fire in the 2300 block of Baker Hospital Blvd. The fire damaged a family's home there, according to the American Red Cross.

A three-story apartment building had smoke and flames showing from the outside from the first through the third floor, Rainey said. The interior fire was being held at bay by an activated sprinkler system.

Fire crews were then able to extinguish the remaining fire.
