(RIDGEVILLE, S.C.) -- A volunteer firefighter was killed in a vehicular crash in Ridgeville while responding to a forest fire on Sunday.

The fatal crash occurred on Horseford Road near the bridge. Authorities said in published reports that Michael Louis Broz, 58, was responding to the blaze in his pickup truck, when the vehicle ran off the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Broz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
